Photography was yhe result of an amalgamation of various developpement from different countries. But it really took off with rhe invention of the Daguerréotype in France in 1835. Consequently, any discussion about photograpy in France must include a mention of some of this country's illustrious pioneers.

The Pioneers

Nicéphore NIEPCE (1765/1833) Throught his work and research he was in at the very start of photography.
Louis Jacques MANDE-DAGUERRE (1787/1851) can be considered as one of th first true photographer s. An associate of Nièpce's he used his work to develop his own Daguerréotype.
Other important figures in the history of photography.: Hippolyte BAYARD, French (1801/1887), Gustave GRAY, French (1820/1868), Adolphe MARTIN, French (1824/1896), J-n TAUPENOT, French (1824/1856), Felix TOURNACHON known as "NADAR", French (1820/1910) etc.

Masters of contemporary photography

EUGENE ATGET. (1857/1927) Originally an actor, he then set about photographing "old Paris" - J-H. LARTIGUE. A professional photographer at the begginning of the last century. Throught his lens he captured and froze moments from an epoch of us never knew - HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON. Born in France in 1908, he took photos that revealed the daily lives of ordinary people. He can be considered as the "eye of the twentieth century - ROBERT DOISNEAU. A French p.p. born in Gentilly near Paris. Originally publicity photographer, he is known as the most famous french photographer for having photographed the daily life in Paris. He worked for Rapho agency - WILLY RONIS. Born in 1910. Like those mentioned above he set about the task of recording working class life and the poorer areas of the city. He captured images upto the 1950s; a period wich was the start of childhood for a certain number of us - BRASSAÏ. He was born on the 9 September 1899, in Brasso, Transylvania. He is known faor having photographed, among subjects, Parisian night-life - EDOUARD BOUBAT. He has been a well known p.p. sinc 1952. He has travelled widely never ceasing to marvel at the thingd he sees. He has photographed incidental moments and insignificant details and yet filled each image with a world of emotion and feeling - GUY THE QUERREC. During the coverage of various new stories he has photographed the banal only to present us with some extraordinary images - JEAN DIEUZAIDE. A new photographer. He become known from 1968 onwards thanks to his striking photos taken in places and at moments where the ordinnary eye have only seen the ordinary - JEANLOUP SIEFF (1933 - 2000). A p.p. Polish origin. He specialises in thr naked female from and nature. He has an unrivalled gift for composition - Jean-François JONVELLE (1943 - 2002). A p.p. knownfor his skill in photographing women - MARC RIBOUD. Born in 1923 he is a new photographer. He has travelled widely, and some of his photographs are famous world-wide.
